There are certainly some issues that we need cleared up regarding
authorizer vs prescriber, but it is obviously a major step in the right direction. At our AGM, we as
members, decided to focus on two issues with the help of “Impact”. The first issue was indeed the double
signature, and the other was direct referral to ENT Surgeons.

While OAPAC has been pushing for much of this over many years this seemed to be a time when we
might gain traction. Since the AGM, the Government Relations Committee has been gathering data and
collecting research that we have utilized with virtual meeting after virtual meeting with those in
government as well as the agencies that are stakeholders for these two issues. Each meeting required a
scripting of our presentation that we stuck to in order to communicate quickly and thoroughly. At each
meeting we felt like our cause was well understood and that we were getting close to getting something
done. We got really excited when the MOH asked for a meeting with us that actually took place today
(Jan 24th at 12 noon).

Interestingly, on the subject of the double signature the representatives indicated that they were familiar
with the issue and were in agreement with our rationale. Little did we know that our efforts preceded us.
We had been making a lot of noise in a very short time. Our focus on this subject was making it easier for
our patients to access ADP funding as well as cost savings to the province. It was literally hours later that
the current memo came out. If you weren’t aware there have been several individuals who have worked
tirelessly to push this issue forward.

In a very short time, we have now had WSIB recognize our status as prescribers and now ADP
eliminating the double signature when prescription was from an audiologist. As audiologists, it has been a
rare occasion where we have seen forward momentum for our profession. We have seen much taken away
from us over the years but in a very short time, we are starting to see audiologists claiming their place in
health care. OAPAC has become a major player in change and there is more to come.

We continue to meet with stakeholders on our other asks for direct referral with audiologists having a
referral number. We have a path forward and will continue to pursue this second issue that will allow us to
better meet the needs of our patients. The support of every member of OAPAC has been key in making
this happen. Hearing impaired patients really do deserve an audiologist.

Sincerely,
Government Relations Committee (formerly known as Government Affairs)

Jan 24, 2024Dear Colleague, By now most of you are well aware of the memo from ADP/MOH regarding the removal of the secondsignature from the ADP form.
